NaMoPaiMo 2021 Progress

NaMoPaiMo stands for "National Model Painting Month", which is an annual event within the model horse collecting community in which participants paint a three-dimensional equine sculpture of some kind. Any size, any design, any medium, any skill level. It was started/is run by Jennifer Bray Buxton, who is actually fairly local to me, though the event itself is international. She has a blog for her own projects (mainly making amazingly detailed scale tack.)

It's a niche hobby, but an extremely active one!

It's not really... my hobby so much, but it is Alex's, and I like horses and I like art, so I've participated for the last couple years.

This year I'm way farther behind than usual. You're allowed to prep your model (sand down the seams, do resculpting, apply primer) before February, though you can't do any finishwork until February 1st. I... had not finished my prep work before that.

Here's me and my partially-prepped victim on January 30th, when I finally submitted my entry.
The model I'm painting is the Breyer mini (Stablemate/1:32 scale) fell pony. I plan to paint it a dark bay tobiano, using acrylic paint.

He went through a couple rounds of primer -> oops missed a seam -> sand again -> reprime last week/early this week.

And here's my pony after I finally sat down and worked on him today!

Not a ton of progress, but more than nothing. Today I mixed up the colors I intend to use, and blocked in my pattern. With so many areas I intend to leave white, I don't want to shade the whole thing, and I hope that leaving the whites blocked in will make for less frustration adding white later.

That was about all I did that was productive today. I have a bit of a headache, but we'll see if food helps that and gives me any energy to work on some writing.
