June 15th - Denver Zoo (Part 1)

First batch of zoo pics! This is everything minus two of the buildings, which seemed like a fair dividing line.

The picture of this toucan was my favorite of the day.

There are a few sections of the zoo where animals are rotated between a few different enclosures. It's an enrichment thing - they get some changing scenery, and the scents of other animals around. Even so, most of the times I've been in the last couple years, the rotating animals have been in the same spots, ha. But this time the lions were in the enclosure that had hyenas last time.

A picturesque shot of the blue sky and the mountain goats and the flowers...

A super cute squirrel. According to his sign, his name is "Danger."

These poor geese. One of them rushed at someone on the pathway (from several feet away) and the guy tried to kick it. Like... it's so small! What do you think it's going to do to you!? It escaped unscathed, then hissed and ran at me, but when I didn't move it just stopped and then stood near me. Then another girl walked by and it hissed at her too, and she screamed and grabbed me, lol. She was 100% ready to sacrifice me, and I respect that.

Also in the aviary, some crested cranes and an ibis.

Not an amazing picture, but a mandrill with a baby!

Reminder that hippos are fucking terrifying and have enormous teeth that will end you.

The penguins are in a temporary habitat while their new enclosure is built. (That's the zoo's current major project, slated to open later this year.) The keeper came in and herded them into the water, and they swam around, but as soon as he walked back up the stairs, they all followed him. It was pretty cute.

I forget the exact species, but an African buzzard of some kind. (His sign noted that buzzard here tends to mean vulture, but for African species usually denotes a hawk.) He was very intently watching something out this side of his cage...

And then I saw what he was looking at. Adorable baby bunny that probably looked *delicious.*

The buzzard in the upper left, and the baby bunny in the lower right. Absolutely taunting him, I'm sure.

A pair of cranes.

Przewalski horse, always a favorite.

We have NEVER seen the tiger here. Pretty much all of the habitats are built deliberately so that animals can be out of sight when they want, and don't have to always be in view. But we heard a nice crunch as we walked by, and sure enough, up on the raised walkway, the tiger was happily chewing on something.

Giraffe, come inside out of the sun.

Two more giraffes. I always love their long blue tongues.

And not an animal, but this is how much cotton is coming off the cottonwoods right now. It looks like snow!
