(no subject)

Another shooting, way too nearby for comfort. We saw several police cars hauling it down the road near our apartment yesterday evening just before we left for my mom's. Had no idea it was for this.

Six dead, including the shooter. Love waking up to my hometown in a national news story for... this. Parts of it happened about a mile away from my apartment.

One of the women who was murdered, Alicia Cardenas, was not someone I knew, but she was a friend of many of my friends. Our local indie paper did a memorial article on her, and it very much tracks with what other people have said about her - an amazing artist, who focused for decades on working to bring inclusivity to the local tattoo industry.

I don't feel like I have a lot to say in conclusion. Another horrible thing that shouldn't have happened.

The whole story has just gotten new layers of horrible as more gets revealed. We need better gun control... especially for a guy who apparently self-published a series of books starring himself hunting down and murdering these specific people by name.

Right? A couple of the people he shot at but did not kill were talking about how disturbing it was to see evidence of him clearly planning an attack on like... their house in particular, and wanting to know how no one took notice and warned them or anything. And the friend-of-friends that was murdered was one of the people he mentioned as a target in his "novel" and talked about wanting to kill. I understand that thought crime isn't a thing, but when you're writing about yourself as a "hero" going and murdering SPECIFIC PEOPLE, and you also apparently own just a ridiculous number of firearms, it seems like it should prompt some concern.

(I'd be a little freaked out to know that someone wrote a book about killing me, too. o_O)

Right? I would be horrified and terrified to learn that I was the target of some guy's revenge murder fantasy. Free speech is a thing, but at some point it crosses into ACTUAL THREAT, and I feel like this definitely crossed that line, and should have been treated as such. (Though I guess maybe no one made the connection before this happened.)
