Reflection on 2023 goals...

Back at the start of 2023 I did set some goals for the year. Pretty tentative, as they generally always are. I know that years are an arbitrary measure of time and all, but it's still convenient!

The quick version of my goals for 2023 were:

  • continue habit tracking
  • expand my tracking to include monthly calendar pages, plus long term goals like books read
  • at work: find a better structure for my days, take my lunch breaks, and limit how often I went over 40 hours/week, and focus more on management's success metrics
  • for my household: aim to do weekly small cleaning projects, make coffee at home more often, repot my plants, display my collection of pins
  • physical: find a good stretching routine
  • writing: write 75k for inkingitout and getyourwordsout, find a new project to feel enthusiastic about, finish my Set Sail zine piece, complete and share at least one new fic
  • meta: try scrivener, finish posting All Strange Wonders and Outbreak
  • personal: keep up on DW
  • creative: draw more of my tracking layouts, participate in National Model Painting Month, find ways to better portray a sense of personal style
  • reading: read 20 books
  • video games: play more
  • social: interact with more communities here

I did continue habit tracking! I had two periods (one worse than the other) in which I really fell apart on it and struggled to catch back up, but I always ultimately did so. It was still helpful for the same things it generally has been. However, I did not really succeed on expanding the tracking. While I made those monthly calendars, I only really used them for a couple of months. (And I only finished the drawn layout for Jan/Feb. I started one for March, but only made it as far as a pencil sketch.) I very much crapped out on the books read page, too. Partially because I didn't read as much as hoped, partially because I'd forget to update it, but I basically didn't use it at all.

For work: I did not get better at taking my lunch breaks, ha. But due to the fact that I fall under the income threshold for "exempt employees," working more than 40 hours started to net me overtime. This made it easier to stick to only 40 hours (because they don't want to pay overtime), and made weeks where I did work more feel less like a punishment. Mixed success on the "improve by management metrics." I have taken on extra responsibilities (only sometimes dragging my feet and kicking rocks about it), and HAVE improved my numbers... though not to the level they'd like.

Household: I really did fall off of the weekly projects, or I'd get stuck in just having to do the same one over and over, because I didn't keep it nice for longer than about a week. We did do pretty well at making coffee at home. Cutting 7 days of purchased coffee down to 3 is still a lot, but is way better! I did finally get my plants replanted! I got about half the pins displayed (though still need to hang them and do the other board(s).)

Physical: we did a pretty good job over the summer of going out on walks and things, as well as to places like the botanic gardens. I didn't find a good stretching routine (I managed about 50/50 with doing stretches and minor exercise when like... waiting for the tub to fill if I was taking a bath?) But no great routine.

Writing: I blew past the 75k goal, but in a way that still felt somewhat directionless. I don't feel like I have much to show for the 170k words the actual total count was 182682 words! that I wound up with, and I wish I did. I never really keyed in on something new that fully absorbed me and held my interest, and that's probably the biggest source of dissatisfaction. I did finish the Set Sail piece, and I wrote 26 oneshots, so that certainly counts for "new fic".

Meta stuff: I didn't get a chance to try scrivener, alas. Though I did finish posting both the ongoing fics!

Personal: I did keep up pretty well on DW, which I'm glad of. I also let myself NOT post on some days, which I think was good as well. I don't want to let those stretches get too long, but I don't want to feel like I HAVE to post daily OR ELSE.

Creative things: I did not draw my tracking layouts. (Well... a couple. But they weren't very impressive.) And I only did two and a half monthly calendar pages. I crapped out on NaNoPaiMo (though the event itself changed as well, as the woman who ran it got fairly burned out, so she hosted it as something much less structured, which worked less well for me.) I have next to no new clothing, so the style thing is also a swing and a miss.

Reading: I read far fewer books than I'd hoped.

Video Games: mixed? I did get through a couple with Taylor, which was fun. However, it's still the thing that gets shuffled to the bottom of the pile so often that I seem to NEVER end up with time for it.

Social: I did not succeed in interacting with communities more. I felt like I generally had so little time, I struggled to stay caught up on friends' journals, without any time to really delve into communities.

Not a whole lot to say otherwise about the year as a whole... no big changes for the most part. The one big thing was getting Bella, back at the very beginning of March! I'm still extremely happy how much better she's doing now than she was at the start. We got to do some very limited travel - just quick car trips, with at most an overnight or two. We put our park pass to pretty good use for at least part of the summer, though I'd of course have liked to do more. The year as a whole seemed to go very quickly... though I guess everyone says that, ha.

Glad that you are getting your lunches so work feels less like hell. I'm also glad Bella worked out so well!

Congratulations on everything you achieved, and interesting reflections! In many ways, this is a lot and in many areas of life so it's pretty amazing how much you did manage :)
