Main Reservoir

Today we stayed a little closer for a walk. We had some errands to run, so didn't really have time for a more serious hike. We went to Main Reservoir, which we call Pelican Pond. No pelicans today - the island in the middle of the lake is completely underwater, and that's usually where they stay. We saw between 10-15 there a couple months ago, and that many pelicans in one place is terrifying! (Not really terrifying, but they are just so big.)

It was a really warm day, over 90° again, which I think is supposed to hold for the rest of the week. The walk wasn't at all strenuous, but it was a bit over a mile and a half. Came away with sunburn, but glad to have gotten out again.

Cy was very happy that around the far side he was able to wade.

There's a quiet little side pond that's covered in cattails and is always the best spot to see redwing blackbirds. This guy was my favorite pic of the day. :)

Mama duck with many little ducklings!

Very nice rose. It smelled wonderful.

A type of purple sweetpeas. These were really pretty!

Yucca blooming.

Another shot of Cy. Hot dog.

The resolution here is pretty bad, because we didn't want to get too close. But there was a pigeon for some reason hanging out on the shore, along with a family of killdeer. The adult killdeer skittered away downshore, but the two babies were still standing there. They were so cute! Smaller than the adults, and still with some fluffy baby feathers, though they were definitely fledglings.

Near the killdeer, a partial crayfish. This one was bigger than I've seen at this lake before! Alex's hand for scale.

These red flowers are having a great year.

The lake, very still.

Cormorant on a branch.

A bit farther down, we got to see a cormorant (maybe this one) wrestling in the water with a fish. The fish was almost as big as the bird, and it won the encounter: the cormorant bobbed back up without lunch. It was pretty interesting to watch them, though, and it's always fun to watch cormorants diving and then coming back up somewhere totally different.

Super chill duck. I know it's personifying, but he looked like he was enjoying the scenery.

Geese and goslings!

We saw a pair of wood ducks, who are always among my favorites. The picture of the male was even blurrier than this one, but at least you can see the female's nice coloring in this picture.

We did see several turtles, though none stayed on their sunning logs long enough for pictures.

We also saw a couple red-tailed hawks (one getting harried by some blackbirds), a redhead duck, as well as a couple other less-common ducks that I couldn't quite ID, a bluejay, heard some towhees... It's nice to have somewhere with such a variety of birds. (I've also seen eagles and osprey there in the past, plus the pelicans.)

It was nice to use both my weekend days doing something, especially as I desperately do want to get into better shape... but I'm still very not ready to go back to work, sobcry.

Sounds like you had a great not-weekend :D

Yay Cy! Not wearing the new hiking pack?

I was also a bit reluctant to go back to work earlier this week (maybe not a good attitude to have for a new job), but I suppose that's the norm? I don't think I've met anyone who was excited to go back to work after a good weekend. ^^;;
