I grew up in the 70s/80s when fruit salad - in my house - consisted of apples, oranges, grapes, canned pineapple, canned peaches, and usually maraschino cherries, tossed together, sometimes with pecan pieces, and coated in Cool Whip. Melons were to be eaten separately and not as a fruit salad.
Then a former friend of mine made a fruit salad out of peaches, nectarines, plums, strawberries, and tossed in a 'sauce' made of honey and wine. My mind was BLOWN.
So a few years back, I made a fruit salad with nectarines, plums, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, and I think that's it and tossed with a honey-lime sauce.
And then a couple of years ago, I discovered white cherries (which are insanely expensive, but they came down enough in price for me) and pitted them and tossed them in with nectarines. No sauce. Just those two aesthetically gorgeous fruits together and couldn't stop shoving spoonfuls into my mouth.
