Fruit salad assembled!
Other than fireworks, we have one 4th of July/anniversary tradition: fruit salad.
I like it as a ~symbolic~ thing, because it was one of those "fuck it, I can do what I want" moments. I said something about fruit salad, and Alex said he hated it, because he doesn't like melon, and fruit salad is just underripe honeydew/watermelon and some grapes, with maybe a strawberry or something else tossed on top.
But just because that's what fruit salad looks like out of the fridge in the grocery store doesn't mean that's what it has to look like, lol. So we bought all our favorite fruits, chopped them up, and hooray! Delicious damn fruit salad, with none of the crap that we don't want!
The ingredients:

The starring fruits: peach, nectarine, and mango.

The berries: Alex requested blackberry and raspberry, plus blueberries and strawberries. And pineapple, which I did get pre-cut, because processing an entire pineapple was slightly more effort than I wanted.
Not pictured: a banana, a bag of red cherries, and some mandarin oranges.
Processing the fruit:
- The nectarine was delicious, but wouldn't come off of the pit for anything
- The peach would have been better with an extra day or two, but was good
- Pitting cherries by hand is extremely tedious, and looks like a murder scene
My favorite is cutting up mango:

Because it goes from this...

... to looking like a hedgehog when you turn it "inside out".
Also, Cy would commit crimes for pieces of mango.

And here's the completed fruit salad monstrosity!
If I could be any animal, I'd love to be a fruit bat. Nocturnal, eats fruit, has wings. Basically my ideal.
Soon-ish we'll head to a neighboring town for their fireworks, since the ones here were last night. But I think I might try for a nap first.

Gosh, mangoes. I miss them. You can even eat them straight from the skin when you cut them up in blocks like that, though it's messier than just eating with a spoon lol.
Hope the fireworks are worth the trip. :)

Mangoes are so good. (It was the stand-out of the whole mix, imo.) I should get them more often, especially while they're in season. I definitely ate the scrap bits off the skin. I scored it for the blocks, and then put those in the salad, but the little bits that were still on the skin went straight to my face, haha.
The fireworks were fun!

Then a former friend of mine made a fruit salad out of peaches, nectarines, plums, strawberries, and tossed in a 'sauce' made of honey and wine. My mind was BLOWN.
So a few years back, I made a fruit salad with nectarines, plums, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, and I think that's it and tossed with a honey-lime sauce.
And then a couple of years ago, I discovered white cherries (which are insanely expensive, but they came down enough in price for me) and pitted them and tossed them in with nectarines. No sauce. Just those two aesthetically gorgeous fruits together and couldn't stop shoving spoonfuls into my mouth.
Your fruit salad looks AMAZING.

Ours yesterday was served with slices of pound cake and whipped cream, ha.
Mine had a little bit of lime and honey, too! I added the lime juice to help keep the fruit from browning, and some honey to counteract the tartness of the lime and the tarter strawberries. The lime and honey weren't wildly strong flavors, but it went well with the whole thing.
Yours sounds delicious! I considered plums, but wound up skipping them, because they didn't feel even close to ripe.
Are white cherries the same as "ranier cherries"? We have those for sale, but they're generally yellow with a hint of red on one side, but the inside is very light if I recall. They're beautiful, and delicious, but they tend to be extremely pricey, so I only give in if I find them on sale, lol.
Thank you! :D

Lime and honey work together because the lime helps to keep the fruit from browning but it also gives it that little contrast to make the sweetness more intense rather than cloying.

I love the flavor of honey and lime together. (I know honey and lemon is the more common combo, but it always makes me think of drinking tea when I'm sick, ha.) But yes, the slightly "deeper" flavor to lime, rather than the "bright" taste of lemon is a good one. (If that makes sense, lol.)

Lime is deeper than lemon! Both are bright, but lime goes to the core while lemon dances on the surface. I love lime with all things (in iced tea over lemon). I use lime juice in my taco meat and as part of the marinade with chicken in so many different ways. It's also good on steak sometimes. Lime paired with chipotle is amazing. The chicken I grilled the other night was marinated in lime juice, olive oil, and oak-smoked garlic salt. So, so good.

I'm glad you know what I mean! I used to very much prefer lemon when I was younger, but I think that's because we rarely had lime anything around when I was a kid, so it was less familiar. Over the last several years I've started to appreciate lime as a flavor much more.

My dog will absolutely do anything you want him to in exchange for bits of mango, lol.
