Third time's the charm...
At least for getting Alex this damn tattoo, lol.
He was supposed to get it on Sunday, and while the roads seemed okay, the artist asked to postpone it. We settled on yesterday.
And then yesterday, as we were grabbing coffee before heading to the shop, the artist texted Alex and said that his car had been stolen and that he had to postpone again.
So we rescheduled for today, and hooray! It actually happened!

After that, we went to see The Batman, because I checked the available seats for the earliest remaining show, and it was a shockingly empty theater. (The later showings were already each at least half full.)
As much as superhero movies don't always appeal to me, I really enjoyed it! I thought it was very well-cast, and the directing/cinematography/music were all fantastic. I thought it did a really good job leaning into the menace inherent in the Batman figure, were such a person to actually be out there... while also having him feel less like a superhero in a lot of ways, as he has missteps and takes hits. It also dealt with the dark noir tone pretty well, striking the right amount of it for me.
(Weirdly one of the things it reminded me of was... Bioshock? I guess just the dark slightly art-deco aesthetic, mixed with the large-scale corruption that just gets worse and worse the deeper you go...)

Yesterday I finished draft 2 of chapter 3 of my current WIP, which puts me at one day ahead of where I'd hoped to be. Better than behind!

Thinking about trying to import my old LJ. I mean, me and plenty of other old or ex-LJ users. While some of the reports of "OMG RUSSIA IS TAKING EVERYTHING OFF THE INTERNET" are certainly exaggerated, it also wouldn't surprise me to have something happen to accounts on there, or for the site to go down in some fashion.
I haven't used LJ in a very long time. I think that before I poked my head back in here in 2018(?) I'd been crossposting (so... 2012-2013ish), but the space on DW had just started to feel friendlier. The changes to LJ bothered me the way they bothered a lot of people. Even pretty far past "strikethrough", it felt hard to trust the site wouldn't do something like that again. And then with Russian ownership, there was a sort of codified homophobia that was hard to ignore. (Not from the userbase, but in site policy and attitude.) Plus the ads. Ugh, the ads.
I'm sure it's an astronomical wait at this point to do the import through DW, but I might see if I can at least get into the queue.
I think I'll probably just import it here. I'd thought about making a new account just to have it serve as an archive and nothing else, but... well, might as well keep it all together. As embarrassing as my high school and early college angst are to me now, lmao.

I swear I remember there was a tool to just... download your whole LJ as a backup, as well. Might be useful if the queue is too long and/or other coding shenanigans.
Edit: Also that is a fantastic tattoo.

I may try again for the comments, since it seems to be a broad "not importing anything" at the moment. Maybe that will clear up at some point.
I don't know if I'll delete my LJ... though if I get the comments ported over, I don't have any reason not to. I've thought about it a lot over the years. It was a thing that mattered a lot to me as a teen and 20something, and is where I met my partner of 12 years... deleting it feels sad.
But the sales of the site, especially when it moved to Russia... I don't have any desire to go back to what it is *now*.
It is a fantastic tattoo! I think it turned out really well.

I deleted my LJ a while back, wish I'd kept a few things, but it was probably for the best. Some of my fandoms would be hit hard if that happened and I needed to post some resources today. I'd been putting it off. Even if March 11 doesn't end access to LJ, it's still better to be prepared, especially since other things and purges could happen. The Russian government isn't get LGBT+ friendly.

I haven't completely decided if I'll delete my LJ or not. I am glad to have gotten my old entries (as embarrassing as teenage me was) ported. That makes it feel like there's no real need to keep my old LJ around... but at the same time, it feels sad to delete.
Yeah, definitely not a queer-friendly platform, not the way the Russian government controls its stuff. I've been thinking about needing to save my journal in some fashion for quite some time... the recent talk about Russia and what they may or may not do regarding the internet just brought it up in a more immediate sense.

I want to see the new Batman movie, but like a lot of them, I'll probably wait till I can download it. I'm intrigued by the actors they've chosen in this one. I was pretty blown away by the Gotham series, though, so that's kind of where I'm partial to the Batman franchise. (I just saw a post yesterday where one of the Batman movies with Val Kilmer had Jon Favreau in it; he directed the first two Iron Man movies and was Happy Hogan in them, so I might have to dig that one up and watch it just because; but then he was also in the Ben Affleck Daredevil as Foggy, the lawyer partner, so that makes me laugh, too, for reasons, esp since there's apparently a scene in the newest Spider-Man where he's sitting at the table with Peter, Aunt May, and the Charlie Cox Matt Murdock - but then I'm a bigger Marvel nerd than anything else.)
I transferred all my LJ over to here ages ago. For a while, I was cross-posting and then I went through and did a major purge on LJ because so many posts were nothing but broken quiz links and then a lot of drama bullshit that I just didn't want to keep anymore. Then I just transferred it all over here and deleted my LJ because all it was was Russian porn bots (after they went through and turned all the porn-y fandom stuff into a crime pretty much. No one I really chatted with was still on LJ at that point and were either here or Tumblr or Twitter or all three, so it was just easier to let it go. It felt weird, though, to hit that delete button because it had been such a huge part of my life.

I'd say it's definitely worth the download when you have a chance! I really liked a lot of the casting choices, especially for the various villains.
I didn't ever see any of the Gotham series, though I heard a lot of good things!
(Lol, what a funny sort of "small world" kind of thing. That's a lot of connections for the same guy, which I always find really funny to notice. I am the type who pokes at IMDB every time we turn a movie on to figure out where else I've seen the actors, ha.) I know you're definitely more of a Marvel fan than DC! I think at this point the whole MCU feels so overwhelmingly enormous and ever-expanding, I can't even consider trying to jump in anywhere, haha.
I'm glad you'd already ported your LJ! I was able to get my entries ported, but the comments failed. I'm not sure yet if I'll delete my LJ, though I could do so now without feeling like I was losing so much. (Though looking at some of those old entries, yikes was I an embarrassing teen, lol.) But there's not really much of a reason other than nostalgia to keep my LJ around. I haven't used it in years, and I don't know that I know anyone else who does. Plus yeah, the content restrictions are no good. But same... LJ was a very big part of my late teens and early 20s, and it's where I met Alex, (and where I met you! hell yeah, decade+ length friendship)... it would feel weird to truly hit delete.

MCU is huge, this is true, but to be fair, the comics are huger. I pretty much watch the movies for the actors because they're what pull me in and the characters I specifically already like-love from the comics, and then I lose myself in the fanfiction. It's less about me getting so involved that I go into full metas like a lot of the other people. I like to be entertained, and where the characters are ones I love, I get more involved in their stories, but when people start into the military industrial complex or criticizing Disney, I just sort of tune out and go back to drooling over Loki and Tony. LOL
Gotham is great, though. If you want to watch it, it's on Netflix. And if by some stroke of luck, you can get access to HBO Max, I recommend Pennyworth, which is a sort of loose prequel to Gotham that follows, specifically, Alfred Pennyworth in 60s England. You get Thomas Wayne and Martha Kane (Bruce Wayne's parents), and it's this weird sort of Mods thing that is fun. You can tell that the creators of Gotham also did Pennyworth because they got an actor who could sound like a younger version of Sean Pertwee's Alfred from Gotham (accent, speech patterns). Anyway, I don't gush much about DC, but I think you'd like Gotham - the mood, the aesthetic. And the villains are absolutely wonderful.
Yeah, it was easy to port over after the purge. Not as much to port. I think I got all my comments; not that there were many. I did meet good people through LJ like you because of my friend from college (you were following her because of her Kingdom Hearts fics) and a few others. But everyone's kind of scattered - mostly to Tumblr and DW but a few are on Twitter, too. One or two are on FB. More than one or two probably. Yeah, if you and I met because of my friend from college, that probably hit around 2005-6, so we're just about 3ish years why of 20 years, you and I.

I'm not sure if I'll wade into the other DCEU films... while I wouldn't mind seeing some of them, none of them are things that I feel I'm missing out on by not seeing, haha.
Yeah, the comics are definitely even more sprawling. But that's genuinely the thing that kept me from ever having interest in more than a bare handful of standalone stories in comics, so having the MCU pretty much do the same thing just very much turned me off from it as a whole. I loathe the idea of "well, if you want to follow this character, you'll have to subscribe to three proprietary streaming services and watch 15 films and 4 series in a specific order. Also, just like with the comics, the writers and directors changed each time so the characterization is inconsistent and emotional plot threads are often completely abandoned or come out of nowhere." It feels like half the shows are just like... ads for a different show or upcoming mainline film. "Make sure you watch Wandavision or else you'll be missing needed context for the next Dr. Strange movie!" It makes it feel like watching any of it would be a chore more than something enjoyable.
It feels a little silly, because I have enjoyed most of the MCU films that I *have* actually seen! The casting is often great! But then I also know how shitty I think a lot of the main plot stuff they chose to do was, that I just... don't care enough to see any more.
Which is a bummer, because it is such a juggernaut of a fandom, I would open up a world of fic if I was into it! (Yours included!)
The aesthetics of Gotham seemed really appealing! I didn't realize it was on Netflix... I might try to give it a watch if I have a chance.
HBOMax isn't one that I subscribe to, but there have been enough things on there that I want to maybe watch that I might eventually get a subscription for at least a while. Stuff that functions as a sort of period piece for a fictional universe really does appeal to me, so that sounds like I'd enjoy Pennyworth, too!
I still think it's funny that we met because of a video game (a thing you don't much care for) and a comic (a thing I rarely read.) But she had her KH fic, and you had a Transmet icon, and thus was a friendship born, haha.
Yeah, I'm friends with a couple other people from LJ days... a couple on FB, a couple on Tumblr. I never really "got" twitter enough to use it, though I'm sure plenty of people did go there as well.
2006ish seems about right - I started college in 2006, and I think that was kind of my prime time in that era of fandom. One of the few things I'm genuinely nostalgic for, haha.
But oh jeez, coming up on two decades of friendship! We'll have been friends for longer than the internet had been a widespread thing at the time we met! Time is weird!

Yeah, as a rule, I don't want to throw myself into all the DC movies, but the actors are all good ones (barring Heard), so that's more of why I'm interested in eventually stumbling into them. I watched Birds of Prey, and that one was fun. I wasn't impressed with the second Suicide Squad, even though I like a lot of the actors, and I still want to watch the first one just because so many people want to hate on Jared Leto for it.
Really with the MCU stuff, you don't have to do that, and now it's all going to be on Disney+. They removed all the MCU series from Netflix and put them onto Disney+. I think they have all the movies on there, too. So if you have access to that channel, you can actually watch it all in one place. Honestly, if you ever have questions about any of it, I can do my best to find your answers, but it does tend to make reading the fanfiction a little easier. Though I do tend to cherry pick what I use from canon. One of the things I'm currently writing is an X-Men 3 Fix-It fic. The first part is from a prompt from Scottxlogan (and the pairing is Scott/Logan), and wow, this is going to be me seriously wrecking up a couple of characters. :D
I think you'd love Gotham and Pennyworth because of the aesthetics. The stories are all real good, too, but yeah, the whole mood really grabs you the most.
LOL I know. I read my friend's fics because they were her fics but I didn't understand the characters overall. The ones I read were all pretty much AUs but with the characters, and those were easy to follow. Transmet is still something I love. I haven't done a re-read in ages, though, but I have the actual hardcopies of the trades. I stumbled on all but one at Half Price in San Marcos one time, and then ordered the one they didn't have.
Nearly 20 years. I've reached 20+ with a few other fandom friends. That's longer than I was with Jeff.

I do wish Jared Leto hadn't decided to be an ass to his costars outside of the film. People who want to hate on actors because they don't like a character they portrayed, or a movie they were in, or whatever are idiots. But reacting to actual behavior I understand. Everyone decides who and what they want to support. I'm generally fairly comfortable with an art/artist divide, but I know that line falls in different places for different people. Though personally I wouldn't necessarily be at "boycott the movie" over it or anything, it sounds like he was being a creep. But also, I mostly got burned the fuck out seeing every damn "he's the Joker to my Harley" #couplesgoals garbage post on FB that I probably would be happier never seeing it, lol. Birds of Prey looked interesting though.
Yeah, I know they have consolidated almost all of it t D+, but it would take a very very big change in the world to get me to want to pay for that. I do pay for Hulu, but D+ is too much for me. Even though it's in one place, the rest of it still seems more like work than fun. Watch three series so that maybe you know who some of the characters are in the twenty fifth film... yeah, I ain't got time for that, haha.
But also, I am no stranger to cherry-picking for fanfic, haha. All I write is AUs, and I pretty much can't even bring myself to care about the newer bits of the canon that I'm borrowing, haha.
Also a big fan of fix-it fic, so I'm glad you're writing some!
The aesthetic or the vibe of a show isn't enough alone to keep me interested, but if that's there and then the characters and the writing are pretty solid, I'll almost certainly enjoy it.
I do still love Transmet. I have the trades on my bookshelf, and have been meaning to do a reread, too.
20+ years is pretty damn impressive. (Puts it into perspective, regarding relationships and stuff.) I'm a fan of how enduring a handful of my online connections have been.

I think Leto's unfortunate choice to do that was based on the way everyone raved and raved about the way Heath Ledger got into the role of Joker. He did a lot of similar stuff, apparently, though not as intensely shitty to others. Leto was trying to emulate him, and it backfired because of the way he chose to do it. I believe he's since apologized to his castmates. And yeah. I mean, a lot of women are always going to see the Joker and Harley as the ideal couple. It's weird, but there are a lot of women who think that's love. They're also usually the ones who think 50 Shades is a romantic story and that Bella and Edward were perfect.
Kas has paid for D+ until like November. I've been watching stuff on it - I watched The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, but I also downloaded the first. I need to download BoBF, too. And the Obi-Wan series. I've already downloaded all the MCU series because they've said those won't be put out on DVD or blu-ray ever, and I know I won't always have access to D+ because I imagine Kas won't keep paying for it since they're not too thrilled about Disney's bullshit. I told them they might as well watch stuff since they've already paid up on the service for a while. I've already got Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. downloaded from ages ago, but I need to download the other MCU series that were on Netflix until recently because again, won't always have D+, and I'll want to rewatch those eventually. I have no problem with downloading stuff. I just need to get another portable hard drive or two to fit everything.
A lot of my fics have fix-it features. Hemispheres is my on-going Tony/Loki fic, and it's getting a lot of fix-it bits. Like things that happened in Loki: The Dark World (yes, I know what I did there LOL) suddenly were obliterated in part 2 of Hemispheres, and a lot of the other stuff is either going to be tweaked to be better or will out and out not happen at all. The fic I'm working on right now (the first part of it is what I'm working on - it'll have three parts, I think, each multi-chaptered since this first one is turning out so long) is an X-Men 3 fix-it. Some things that happened are still happening, but they'll happen slightly differently, and I changed the big glaring flaw with the movie, and that becomes the fic's ship.
Oh the stories in Gotham and Pennyworth are good, too. Pennyworth's is WEIRD but it's fun. But the atmosphere is a lot of fun, too.
I feel like reading Transmet would be just like looking out into our world the way it is at this point. Except that I don't have a bowel disruptor, and that makes me sad.
Oh yeah. I'm looking forward to meeting more online friends in the future once we can move out of Texas.

Yeah, there have been plenty of people who use some sort of "method acting" to help them encapsulate a character. And sometimes that seems to really help their performance! But at the point where you start being an utter creep or harassing your coworkers... you should know that's not okay. I'm glad if he realizes that and has apologized.
That is the truth though; I know for a fact a few of the "omg, I want to be the Harley to his Joker" types were also "Christian Grey is the perfect boyfriend" types. *Barf*
Yeah, I don't know that I could be okay with paying for D+ with Disney's seeming increasing levels of bullshit. I really honestly hate that they own both Marvel (in terms of MCU) and Star Wars. (Even prior to the recent "supporting shitty politicians" and "systematically refusing progressive content" stuff, their garbage about refusing to pay royalties to SW writers was infuriating enough to make me not want to support any of the new Star Wars stuff, as good as I've heard The Mandalorian was.
At the same time, I know I'm feeding the beast by paying for Hulu, and even fandom-wise, KH is all about Disney stuff. (Though I haven't bought media for it in more than a decade, and my fic just... ignores all the Disney, lol.)
I do try NOT to let Disney's involvement with things poison my opinions of the works, because there are SO MANY talented people (writers/directors/animators/actors/etc.) who are doing good work... and Disney is such a damn monopoly in the industry, I can't blame them for doing that work under the Disney umbrella.
Maybe someday I'll have a computer that can handle torrenting again, and that can remove the moral quandary more completely, lol.
(And just in general, I'm very pro-downloading stuff you know you want access to. Especially when companies say they don't plan to ever release things on physical media. Welp, I don't trust always having streaming access, and sometimes I know I want my own copy.)
The ability to fix things is one of the great things about fic, imo. And especially with universes that get huge, and may or may not have a lot of internal consistency, the freedom to say "hey, I hated that plot point, so I'm ignoring it" is fantastic. MCU obviously falls under that category, with wild differences in writers/directors between installments, and consistency of character development and arcs very clearly not being a big priority in some cases. KH does too, because damn that lore got Weird and often Stupid As Hell.
A Transmet reread would probably feel too close to home at this point. I feel like every presidential election since I was in high school (the first time I read it) has reminded me of The Smiler, and it just keeps getting WORSE. How does it keep getting WORSE? A bowel disruptor would at least help, lol
