Habit Tracking: Week 19 (May 08 - May 14)
A bright chameleon this week, because I like it. And the slightly odd-looking frog, in the hopes of summoning a frog when we went to Hudson Gardens. (It worked!)
And the closest thing to a snapping turtle that I had a sticker for.
This was... not a great week. I felt kind of off for a lot of the week - I had the really awful sunburn [which started peeling today, argh], plus the pretty painful back injury for several days. I had at least two days where I was just in an unexplained bad mood. Then a lot of people I know lost loved ones, and I hurt for them. I also consistently struggled with writing, and the switch from housesitting back home was a minor but present stress. Just... not the most fun I've ever had. That said, my days off at the start of the week were nice, going to the gardens and then a short walk at a local pond.
Goals for the week:
- I did remember to call my mom on Mother's Day
- We continued housesitting, and I remembered to get the mail and fill the feeders (including the hummingbird feeders) on Tuesday
- I barely finished the rough draft of Island Territory. There are some really sketchy parts that are going to need SERIOUS rewriting, but it's done enough for me to start on the second draft.
- I didn't start the second draft yet - I'm almost exactly a week behind where I'd hoped to be, so I've got some catching up to do!
- I did read more of The Hanged Man, and it's getting really good! Taylor was right!
Tracked habits:
- Work - 5/7
- Household Maintenance - 6/7, mostly taking care of mom's house
- Physical Activity - 6/7, with the most serious going to Hudson Gardens and on a local walk, plus cleaning.
- Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 3/7, all over 500
- Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
- Meta Work - 1/7
- Personal Writing - 7/7
- Other Creative Things - 3/7, mainly taking pictures
- Reading - 6/7, mostly on The Hanged Man, but a little fic as well
- Attention to Media - 5/7, watching The Outer Limits mostly
- Video Games - 0/7
- Social Interaction - 6/7
Total words of fiction written: 1701 on Island Territory

Sorry about your week; it seems like the nice days at the start sort of balances out the not-nice days that followed, though it's hard for me to say if it really is balanced or not. I'm reminded of the Wheel of Fortune Tarot card -- sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down -- but I don't think the wheel is supposed to turn this much in such a short period. (Speaking of, The Hanged Man sounds like a Tarot reference, and now I'm curious about it.)

It is a bit more up and down, and I'm also not sure it really balances out exactly. But that's part of why I like keeping the habit tracker/journal. I write very short blurbs about each day - just a couple lines, usually - but it helps me to remember at the end of a rough string of days that I did have good days too!
But uh, this Wheel of Fortune is spinning a bit *too* fast. I'm okay with a slower turn!
And it is a Tarot reference! It's book two of three (so far) in a series called The Tarot Sequence. (The author, KD Edwards, did one of the pairings for the Literary Tarot, though I can't recall which card.)
The series is fantasy - urban fantasy, I guess, but also kind of alternate history. It has some fun worldbuilding (and banter, the key to my heart.) The Tarot connection isn't terribly literal - the society at the center of the series is set up around courts that are each one of the major Arcana. But knowing at least some about Tarot adds an interesting dimension to the characters and which courts they belong to.

The Hanged Man cover is really good! (I also like the Hourglass Throne cover.)
In some cases the arcana as they appear in the story and their meanings as cards are a kind of... dramatic irony, of a sort. Cards that are mostly positive are sometimes bad people. Others, it just provides a bit of background tension around the character - The Tower is a character who serves as a mentor/employer/protector for the protagonist, and is well-respected by most. But uh... it definitely gives him a bit of menace.
Though I also admit that I likely have missed some context too, because I'm not extremely knowledgeable about tarot; I know some cards fairly well, but others I would absolutely need to look up meanings for. (I should start doing some readings and familiarize myself with them more!)
