Fruit salad assembled!
Other than fireworks, we have one 4th of July/anniversary tradition: fruit salad.
I like it as a ~symbolic~ thing, because it was one of those "fuck it, I can do what I want" moments. I said something about fruit salad, and Alex said he hated it, because he doesn't like melon, and fruit salad is just underripe honeydew/watermelon and some grapes, with maybe a strawberry or something else tossed on top.
But just because that's what fruit salad looks like out of the fridge in the grocery store doesn't mean that's what it has to look like, lol. So we bought all our favorite fruits, chopped them up, and hooray! Delicious damn fruit salad, with none of the crap that we don't want!
The ingredients:
The starring fruits: peach, nectarine, and mango.
The berries: Alex requested blackberry and raspberry, plus blueberries and strawberries. And pineapple, which I did get pre-cut, because processing an entire pineapple was slightly more effort than I wanted.
Not pictured: a banana, a bag of red cherries, and some mandarin oranges.
Processing the fruit:
- The nectarine was delicious, but wouldn't come off of the pit for anything
- The peach would have been better with an extra day or two, but was good
- Pitting cherries by hand is extremely tedious, and looks like a murder scene
My favorite is cutting up mango:
Because it goes from this...
... to looking like a hedgehog when you turn it "inside out".
Also, Cy would commit crimes for pieces of mango.
And here's the completed fruit salad monstrosity!
If I could be any animal, I'd love to be a fruit bat. Nocturnal, eats fruit, has wings. Basically my ideal.
Soon-ish we'll head to a neighboring town for their fireworks, since the ones here were last night. But I think I might try for a nap first.
