Continuing my cataloging of fanfiction ideas for personal posterity...

After narrowing down the top 20 fic ideas I'd selected, I whittled it down to eight that I want to actually try to get outlined:

Kingdom Hearts: Cyberpunk AU
This is one of those ideas that keeps coming back, ha. The KH series explores a lot of different themes that I feel like sync up well with cyberpunk as a genre, especially exploring identity and self and what it means.
The plot is regarding the nobodies of KH2 as clones of the “somebodies” in question, and people who want to control them vs. their desire for control over their own lives, plus how much it matters to the people that they’re clones of. The main trio are hired to investigate a supposed “break in” at Kairi’s father’s lab, and are told to get stolen tech back... but it turns out it was more of an escape than a break in, and some of those escaped clones include genetic material taken from Kairi and Sora. At one point I’d intended for this to parallel the canon as closely as possible, while shifting to a different setting and genre, but that’s not really my intent any longer.
Pros and Cons of this fic:
Pros: It’s a genre I like but haven’t ever tried to write for. I like the ways in which the themes intersect and think it will be fun, and as mentioned above, I think it's a really suitable genre. I hope that I can make this a fairly mid-length story, though that’s maybe debatable. I’ve thought about this one on and off for long enough that I have at least a little bit of a plan in place.
Cons: There are aspects of this that are very similar to the conceit of Potentials; that there are alternate versions of the mains. But that’s basically the canon, so I’m not too worried about that. I’m not extremely well-read in the cyberpunk genre, so I know it is possible that I could trip over in-genre issues/cliches that I’m unaware of. I do want it to suit the cyberpunk aesthetic, but I also want to try and make sure the thematic underpinnings are there too, but I think those are. Somewhat unfortunately, I’m given to understand that there are a lot of applicable themes that are explored differently and with different characters later in the KH storyline... after the point where I’d sort of noped out. I did at one point put this idea on hold in the hopes of catching up with canon and using those future bits as further fodder for this fic, but at this point I don’t think the canon catch up will ever happen, so I have to risk my story feeling as if it’s “missed” obvious connections.

Silent Hill: Documentary
This one is intended to be a longer SH fic. The main character is a young woman planning to do a documentary on the weird history of Silent Hill. She brings her brother along, an urban explorer looking for new places to explore, plus their mutual friend who is focused on a more traditional local history. The three quickly wind up drawn into bizarre happenings of their own within the town.
It’s probably the one that’s the most “game” like, as in it’s about a specific character coming to the town and experiencing the classic fog and otherworld horror aspects. It’s also fairly self-indulgent in terms of how much I want to look at my favorite bits of lore. Though because it is somewhat similar to the games, I wanted to incorporate some sense of the multiple outcomes that the games offer, which originally I figured would just mean having a couple different endings, though I wasn’t completely sure how I’d make that work for the story.
The more I thought about it, the more it seemed like maybe I should incorporate more of a choice system... as in ultimately making this a Choose Your Own Adventure story, to at least some degree. However, I’d need to figure out how to design it to both make the choices feel like they matter, while also not making any of the paths miss the bulk of the plot. I don’t want it to require a bunch of read-throughs to get all the bits, but also don’t want the choices to be meaningless.
Pros and Cons of this fic:
Pros: The fun and challenge of writing a CYOA story! The more I've thought about it, the more I find that to be an exciting thing to attempt. I also really enjoyed writing the last Silent Hill fic I did, and want to write another horror-focused story. It is fairly self-indulgent in terms of liking to explore all the fun settings and lore bits that I like, and I count self-indulgence as a positive. And I am really proud of one specific game setting that I adapted to the fic setting.
Cons: The challenge of writing a CYOA story! It’ll require some research on how best to structure those. It’s also a little bit of a “risk” because if the paths branch too much, it’s possible a reader would completely miss large parts of the story... which with a fandom that’s as small in terms of fic reading as SH, could mean it basically doesn’t get read at all. I also feel a bit like I already wrote my “better” SH fic idea in Outbreak, which makes me feel like this is a step backwards. Though I hope it’s more just different. (Outbreak did feel more unique, though.)

Silent Hill: "Ghost Town"
Another Silent Hill fic! This one was inspired by a very specific place we used to drive through (abandoned train tracks!) and some idle daydreaming about it. I was initially planning to nix this one, because the idea for it was so small... but in looking at it, I sort of found a plot that interests me more. Basically the idea is about the influence from Silent Hill spreading farther beyond its borders, in this case, via a missionary from the town who traveled out west, spreading the early cult’s message. Now there are still lingering traces of his presence and the corruption that it spread.
Pros and Cons of this fic:
Pros: Again, some more horror writing, which is something I find fun. I’m also pretty happy with the newer version of the plot, which has some shiny and new vibes still.
Cons: This one probably needs some research, because I want to make the history of the missionary feel appropriate to the time period. I think that is very doable, but again... needs research. Looking into spiritualism and occultism in the old west will be an interesting topic, but that still takes a lot of effort and time commitment for something that's not likely to have any real readership. I also would need to work to make it fit within the lore of the series, though it may just have to get a bit handwavey.

Kingdom Hearts: Angels and Demons AU
This story idea has been rattling around in my brain for several years now. I think it probably came about right around when the first season of Good Omens dropped, though it’s not at all based on it. The angels and demons of this story are more like... I don’t know, that CLAMP series “Wish” or something. That sort of... utterly not-accurate-to-any-religious-portrayal sort of thing that at least felt pretty popular in the anime of my teenhood. Really, I just like pretty people with wings. I’ve got Riku, Kairi, and Naminé as my angels, with Axel as a demon trying to thwart them, while they’re sent to watch over mortal Sora and Roxas, plus Xion when she shows up. Riku has a lot of particular angst because he’s afraid of falling. All three of the guardian angels wind up falling for their charges, and so does demon Axel. I need to sort out the ending, because I’m all about my happy endings, but I don’t want it to feel TOO contrived for everyone to get theirs.
Pros and Cons of this fic:
Pros: Pretty people with wings! This is one that has a lot of iddy potential that I want to really lean into. I’m perfectly happy for it to be basically blasphemy all around. I get to write a ship I haven’t ever actually written for (Axel/Roxas/Naminé/Xion) in addition to my usual.
Cons: I have some strong angst about how much I hate the over-prevalence of Christian iconography and such, and the whole general “culturally Christian” country we’re stuck with, and I feel like using angels and demons, even as just what amounts to romance tropes, is furthering it in some tiny way... but then again, it’s angels and demons having threesomes and moresomes with humans and each other, so this is pretty fucking blasphemous, and I kind of enjoy that.
The other big con of it for me is that second ship is going to be a HIGHLY controversial one to write in this fandom. Axel/Roxas is super polarizing - it was one of the absolute top ships in the fandom back when the second game came out (what with lines like “he made me feel like I had a heart” and all), but sometime after that, it became the pet target of the fandom antis. They have decided that it’s an unconscionable age gap (even though canonically both characters are fantasy!clones who have existed for the exact same amount of time, and even the "somebodies" they're clones of don't have an age gap of more than a few years), or the fact that there's arguably a "found family" vibe to Axel, Roxas, and Xion, that means Axel must be their "father", which creeps me out about 100 times more, to be honest. But that also means the ship gets derided as “basically incest” despite them... not being related. SO it’s quite possible that this would be the first fic I’d write that could be the target of some pretty nasty and vitriolic antis, which is a thing I’ve watched happen to people I know in the fandom, and that does make me nervous. I know I can archive lock and all, and if it bothers any of my “regular” readers, then they should mind the pairing tags.

Sparrow Hill Road x Alice Isn't Dead crossover
I love this idea, and I’ve wanted to write it for years now. Sparrow Hill Road was a really fun book (I liked the second and third books as well, though I enjoyed the first one being a set of self-contained short stories about Rose, rather than the bigger plot of the second and third.) Alice Isn’t Dead was a fun podcast. Both of them have great spooky road trip/liminal spaces vibes, and I think having the two of them intersect would be great! It’s not a long or involved plot, and would probably be a pretty short fic, with Keisha picking Rose up as a hitchhiker, and then encountering some sort of monster. Probably at least one mention of “your Alice better not be Alice Healy...”
Pros and Cons of this fic:
Pros: How great a crossover I think this would be! It’s also a short fic, which is nice. I had a pretty complete outline already, I think.
Cons: I need to do a canon refresh on both of these. It’s been a while since I read the book, and while I’m happy to set this fic sometime around that time (so not taking into account all those later plot developments), I still need to remember what all the norms for Rose *are.* Ghost abilities, limitations, timeline, etc. It’s also been a long while since I listened to Alice Isn’t Dead, and I feel like I have chunks of that canon I don’t remember as well either. But... for a fic that’s going to be a few thousand words, probably, it’s really hard to justify listening to a whole three-season podcast and reread a novel when I struggle so badly to find time for either of those things as it is.

Kingdom Hearts: Fantasy!Bachelorette
This was one of the AUgust ideas from the first round of the challenge that I did. The prompt was "arranged marriage," but the idea sort of went sideways, ha. I functionally wrote chapter one of this fic: Kairi is set to marry someone from Destiny Island to cement some sort of alliance. The idea of an arranged marriage is abhorrent in the culture of Destiny Island, so they send an assortment of eligible partners, trying to make sure Kairi has a choice. Hence... high stakes fantasy! The Bachelorette. Wakka, Tidus, Selphie, Riku, and Sora all have decided to offer themselves up as potential partners. They wind up disqualified one by one, until Kairi winds up with both Riku and Sora.
Pros and Cons of this fic:
Pros: this one is pretty light-hearted, and should be fairly fun and straightforward to write. I do already have a first chapter (though I’ll likely rewrite it, should I go with this one.) I think it should be a relatively direct story to outline, without too much in the way of subplots or complicated twists to keep track of.
Cons: I don’t generally *like* straightforward romance fics; I love romantic subplots, or some additional component to the romance that makes it interesting. This has the whole alliance type thing, but that’s really more of the b-plot for this one, which I don’t know if I’ll enjoy as much as I hope. It’s also several characters I’m not used to writing, whose characterizations in the KH series don’t necessarily match up well to their original canon characterizations from FF, which I am *also* not wildly familiar with. I feel like my wanting to match most of the others up with their canon love interests (Tudus with Yuna, Wakka with Lulu) is kind of a boring choice.

Kingdom Hearts: Holiday RomCom
A sort of dumb idea about “how would a holiday rom-com be made to appeal to me?” (Along the same lines as "what would Twilight look like if it were geared toward my id?") Because I don’t love holiday stuff and I don’t love rom-coms, I especially do not tend to care for holiday rom-coms. (Sometimes I like them in theory, because I get the appeal of fluffy, comforting romance! But in practicality, I’ve yet to find one I actually enjoyed.) So I tried to figure out what WOULD make me like one, and the answer is usually “poly romance.” So here we are.
Pros and Cons of this fic:
Pros: again, a fairly light-hearted story, probably of short to middle length, which would be a nice change from some of the much longer ones. This is also another one that’s really intended to just appeal to me, and leaning into that should be enjoyable.
Cons: it’s an example of something that I don’t typically care for, so I’m hopeful that I DO find a way to enjoy it. At the same time, I don’t want it to come across as being nasty toward the genre as a whole (though I don’t think it does; if anything, it might play some of the tropes almost too straight. But I do really hate when someone decides that a genre sucks so they’re going to “do it right”, because it’s almost always a really douchey take, haha.) This is also one that has a pretty obvious posting window, because I would want to make sure that I can post it at the holidays. However, that means I have to write it pretty significantly before the holidays, which is tough, because I struggle to keep up the holiday spirit at the holidays, so how do I try to feel it that early?

Kingdom Hearts: Worldhopping Fairytale Monstrosity
The big one! This one is my biggest source of idea debt, and has been in various stages of progress/at least thinking about it for close to two decades now. (Embarrassing!)
It started as my version of a Kingdom Hearts 3, but catering to my interest in traditional fairy tales in place of Disney stories.
Then it went through a big replotting in a foolish attempt to appease people in the fandom that I didn’t even know (because there were a handful of people who were at the time annoyed that the Disney side of the game was largely ignored when it came to fan fiction, with more of the fandom focusing on the main trio, the Final Fantasy characters, and the Nobodies).
Then it got another big replot when I decided to trim down on the parts that did not “spark joy” (because I am real burned out on Disney as a company and general entity, and writing “Disney worlds” into the fic felt like a drag the whole time, which wasn’t fun for me, and probably wouldn’t be fun for the people who wanted those worlds).
Then Kingdom Hearts 3 did come out, so this was now firmly in AU territory instead of “speculative continuation branching out from canon so far.” I’d always known it would stray into being an AU, but at this point it’s inescapably so. SO… the current thought is to leaning into that, and just making it an AU altogether, with canon events just not having ever happened.
Pros and Cons of this fic:
Pros: This idea won’t leave me alone. Almost two decades on, it feels like it’s worth going for, if I’m still wanting to work on it. While it hasn’t been something I’ve been “obsessively” thinking of the way I once did, it IS one of the stories that really captivated me at a few different points, and I miss that energy and excitement. Giving myself the freedom to just make it a full AU should be enjoyable.
Cons: This will be a very long haul. The last outline I did come up with I’d estimated would turn out around 150k words, which is roughly twice the length of the longest fic I’ve posted so far. Writing that out - twice, if I’m going to do two full drafts - is a dauntingly long process. This is also that huge source of idea debt in terms of how much energy I have put into it over years, and it really has reached the point where I either need to get the project done or turn that attention and effort to something else. I had sort of made peace with putting it aside, but as soon as I did, the interest flared up again, and I unshelved it.
I also have a few aspects that I’ve been wavering on and need to make decisions about. Originally I wanted to try and utilize fairy tales from all over the world, rather than just European ones. However, there’s a lot of pushback against western retellings of stories from other cultures. I certainly don’t feel like I’m doing anything world shattering, or that I’m a super exception who is doing these stories special justice or anything. It seems easier in a lot of ways to just not worry about it, and focus on the stories that I do have a bit more cultural context for... but is "easier" the way to go? Is it worth trying to incorporate at least a couple from other cultures? I’m still deciding.

This is pretty much just... for posterity, I guess.

It's been slower going than hoped, but I've been trying to narrow down all the different ideas I've had for fics and for original works and figure out what things I want to maybe at least think of working on. My hope is to get a decent "bank" of ideas outlined, so that it's easier for future-me to find things to work on. Part of my struggle for the last... well, year or so, has been that I just didn't know what TO work on. Every time I'd try to settle on something, it just felt like so much work to start a new thing, and I'd just sort of spin my wheels.
My hope is that if I can get a few things outlined, then it'll be easier for me to pick them up when I'm ready to get to writing. If I can get a few with some actual writing progress, maybe I will have enough things at different stages of completion that I can jump in on them with whatever I have the energy for.
I don't know for sure that'll work as hoped: I traditionally really do not like switching back and forth between projects. However... I don't know if focusing solely on one thing is always the best either, especially when it comes to long projects. Too often I wind up getting burned out on that One Thing, and then I'm stuck because I don't want to work on anything else. It also means that I will forever be stuck having to choose between different types of work: if I'm only doing one thing at a time, then if I want to write original things, I have to forgo writing fic. If I want to work on the long passion-project fic, I'm resigning myself to nothing else for a year or two. So... giving this a try.

My first round of cuts was looking at my list of fic ideas and narrowing it down to things I was still interested in. The list is currently at 234 fic ideas... granted, an awful lot of those date back to high school (even earlier?), and are for fandoms I haven't been into in a decade or more, ha. Just as many of the ideas are... bad. Lol.

So I narrowed it down to 20 ideas that I had the most interest in. The oldest that made it to the list was #172. The newest was #231.

After narrowing it down, these seven were my first round of cuts:

Silent Hill: "Carnival"
I have fondness for this idea, which was the first SH idea I remember ever having. That said, it reads a little bit like it. It’s a bit too obvious/in-fandom cliche: a girl comes to the town under mysterious circumstances, looking for a friend that she lost contact with until finding out she was in the town. I might someday try to rework some of the ideas, because I genuinely like some of them, but as it is now, it doesn’t work as well as I would want it to.

Kingdom Hearts: "Birds of a Feather"
This is a reworked version of a fic my ex girlfriend and I were going to co-write. We never got more than a few chapters in, and I granted it to her in the breakup. It was called “I’ll Meet You With a Smile,” I think, when we were writing it. There were parts of it I never loved, and characterization and ship preferences within the fandom that we didn't agree on, but that I mostly let her decide on for the fic. It was a kind of over-dramatic contemporary AU - mostly high school and college AU, and all the various groups coming back together over summer vacation. (She was on her first semester of college; I was on my second year, so it felt topical at the time, I think.)
My new version of it is for my preferred ships instead of the ones we were cowriting, and is more of a cafe/small-town AU. It centered around some of the characters setting up a queer-friendly/queer-oriented cafe, and then having the various characters meet and hook up and get together. I think parts of that idea would be cute, but overall I’m not that interested in spending a lot of time on a glorified coffee shop AU, even if it’s broader than that.

Kingdom Hearts: "All the Fucks We Give"
This was purely spitefic. The prevalence of antis within the fandom, and particularly when they at one point had targeted a specific acquaintance of mine within the fandom, this was a fic collection that she’d proposed. In canon there’s an area that’s held a bit out of time, which the characters canonically use for training (I think; idk, I never made it to that part of canon) and the proposal was to use that as a setting for any and everyone’s ships of choice having messy kinky sex out of spite for the purity police. I really wanted to participate, but at this point that was YEARS ago, and I feel like the fires of spite have died. At the time I was still working up to trying to put a sex scene to page, but now it feels like it’s been too long for this one. (I don’t even know if the collection ever went up or if anyone ever wrote anything for it, heh.)

Shades of Magic x Dishonored crossover
These two stories have a really great aesthetic similarity that I want SO BADLY to exploit. (Apparently I’m not entirely alone - the same artist apparently did the official tie-in comics for both series?) But the whole “multiple Londons” of SoM, plus the clear alternate/fantasy!London of Dishonored… And in Dishonored, the Outsider as the chaos/trickster god, with the black eyes… while in SoM they have the Antari, the uniquely gifted magic-workers who have… single black eyes.
The tiniest little seed of an idea is that the city of Dishonored is one that’s somehow been sundered from the Black/White/Red/Grey Londons, and that the creation of the Outsider (implied in canon to have been a deliberate act, where some group tortured a young man in a ritual attempt) being a failed attempt to create an Antari.
Now, I really like and vibe with this idea. HOWEVER. This is another of those things that would require quite the canon refresh: I’d need to reread the original trilogy for SoM at least (plus there’s now the second trilogy coming out) and I’d need to replay the various games, only one of which I own. (Or find some really thorough let’s plays.)

Kingdom Hearts: Potentials sequel
This was a pretty minor idea from back when I’d just finished the fic (my superhero AU). The idea of a follow-up where Aqua, Terra, and Ventus show up, because there are still dimensional instabilities. I think the main idea was that Xehanort, having been the big bad of Potentials, is a bigger threat than known; something of a dimensional parasite, creating destruction in every dimension he manages to reach, and he’s unlikely to have been destroyed after the events of Potentials. Mostly I feel like I have moved on from this idea. I still like it, but that fic was years ago now, and I have lots of other things I’d rather write. I particularly feel like this isn’t where I’d want to dump the energy of having to figure out all the KH canon that I never got to, haha.

Firefly x Leverage crossover
This was a very silly idea, I think, but it really did grab hold for a short time. The idea was that it was set in the Firefly universe, and Simon had hired Hardison (and maybe the rest of the team) to help save River (since he’d said he’d had help finding her, when she was brought on board Serenity.) Alternatively, he hires them eventually to try and rescue the others who were being held in the same facility/for the same purposes. I don’t think I ever got much farther than that, except that I think there’d be some fun character interactions, but there’s not really anything else underpinning the whole idea.

Stranger Things: parallel timelines
I feel like timeloop fix-its for ST were pretty much a dime a dozen, or at least that was my impression a few steps removed from the fandom itself. This one was not a timeloop, per se; but Steve winding up going through every possible different dimension until he could find one where everything worked out correctly and Eddie survived. Maybe a timeloop would really make more sense, since I wasn’t truly utilizing any weird AU ideas for the different dimensions he was going through. Buuuut I am who I am as a person, so I also had him figuring out that he could save MORE people - Chrissie, being the main one. Not his original goal, but in going through incarnations over and over with her, he couldn’t leave her behind and wound up falling in love with her a bit, too. I think I made it just a giant polycule by the end, because it was sort of one of those “now that I’ve spent so much time with all of these people I can’t give up any of them.” I like the idea, but I’m not into Stranger Things enough to put in the effort that pulling this sort of thing off well would require.

That left me with lucky thirteen ideas remaining. I cut five more.

Silent Hill: Doctor/Internship/Revival
This is technically three ideas rather than one, but I'd lumped them together. The three were somewhat interconnected SH stories that expanded on a few repeat characters I planned to focus on for a sort of ongoing set of fics around Silent Hill. "Doctor" was about a woman investigating mysterious deaths at a Silent Hill hospital; "Internship" was about a girl who got a job interning at the historical society and was drawn into the cult; and "Revival" was about the cult having an underground revival post-SH3 (since it’s stated that Douglas largely exposed the cult and what they tried to do to Heather, and the cult disbanded after that.)
I like all of that, but lack any particularly strong plot elements for any of them but the first one. I could, I suppose make these into shorter fics. These were all originally intended to expand on characters that would be mentioned in a different ongoing fic, the one codenamed “Documentary.” Because of that, I think these ones are safe to put on hold until and unless I actually write that fic, at which point these could be short sequel or tie-in type stories for it.

Kingdom Hearts: Stardust AU
Well, there’s real unfortunately all the allegations against Neil Gaiman, which makes me pretty uninterested in ideas focused on works of his. The original idea was about the “what if Kairi was a literal falling star” thought that also led to the Howl’s Moving Castle crossover.
There are things that lent really well to this as a crossover - the numbered siblings meshing well with the numbered organization members, for instance. There are aspects of this that I think would be fun, especially because I enjoyed the Howl's Moving Castle one so much, and liked the fantasy fairy tale vibes. I was reluctant initially because of it being another thing that needs a canon refresh. Now it’s not a canon I want to refresh particularly, so that kind of makes that decision for me.

Zero Escape: ill-advised hookup (includes some vague spoilers for 999 and VLR)
The Zero Escape series is one I really love, but am way too intimidated to write fic for. It’s such a weird series, I don’t know that I can match the vibe.
In the second game, there's one aspect that's a very deliberate tragedy: that in the timeline that leads to Virtue's Last Reward, Junpei never sees Akane again after the events of 999, despite spending years and years looking for her. This is meant to be a tragic thing for those characters! However, I was more upset in VLR about the fact that Aoi isn't there! After everything HE did to make the events of 999 happen, to save her, he doesn't even get mentioned!? THAT was more upsetting to me, and I had a much harder time believing she could cut Aoi out of her life as opposed to Junepei. (I will say that according to some meta I read somewhere, Aoi was supposedly helping with the events of VLR, but I do not remember seeing that confirmed in canon. I do need to replay the game.)
So for this stupid fic idea: with both Junpei and Aoi being left behind by Akane, I really just wanted them to have the worst toxic hookup ever. I don’t hate the idea, but I also feel a little bad having that be the only thing I’d write for the fandom, ha.

Twilight for my id
I’ve looked at Twilight as a whole thing... I was a Twilight-hater for a while, and then did try to give it a fairer shot, but it was still deeply not my thing. I can recognize how it IS candy for someone’s id, just not mine! But looking at it that way made me feel like... well, what WOULD make it appeal to my id?
I mean, personally, my id latches onto queer poly stories, and I feel like that could actually work pretty well within the Twilight structure, with how close-knit and insular the main family is and all. It’d be a fun source of drama, even, that it’s not just one character falling for this outsider character, but that it’s also fitting this in with preexisting relationships. And that’s always how I want to resolve love triangle, so bring the werewolf along!
At the same time, if I want to focus on rewriting a story from the ground up to appeal specifically to me as a self-indulgent exercise... well, why wouldn’t I put that energy toward my OWN story, instead of on dismantling/rebuilding one that I didn’t even like?

Kingdom Hearts: "Dressed to Kill"
This is one that has existed in some form or another for a really long time, though got a kind of idea revamp within the last few years. I remember the first seed of the idea when I was in high school, so it goes back a ways! The original idea was sort of like... a mafia war of sorts, I think between rival families. The first incarnation may have been Riku/Sora, but I feel like it became an OT3 fic pretty early on? Anyway, I wrote up the sort of conclusion to this idea (though a bit different than the original way I’d envisioned it) for one of the AUgust fics. I’d hoped that would get it out of my system for good, but it didn’t quite. Instead of the rival family thing, I’d made it into a crime family son being pushed to marry a political family daughter, and then their mutual love interest, with an OT3 ending. The newer version of it that I've been thinking of basically has Riku and Kairi deciding to try and outdo each other at being Sora’s sugar daddies. I feel like this could be fun to write, pretty light-hearted despite the whole “mafia/political corruption forced marriage” angle. But I really DID get the conclusion out of my system already, so it doesn’t feel all that pressing. I might still come back to it.

Ultimately, I wound up with eight fic ideas that I want to move forward with for now.

That doesn't mean that none of the above will ever get used... I could come back to almost any of these eventually. (The fact that I can't really think up a good plot for the Shades of Magic/Dishonored crossover pains me. Those Silent Hill fics might see the light of day eventually. Any of the others could possibly strike me with the bat of inspiration and move up the priority list.)
mistressofmuses: Image of nebulae in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue (Default)
For May, my goal was to finish the last five fics that were hanging over my head from AUgust last year.

And I did it!

I'd given myself a goal of 20000 words (figuring if each fic was about 2000 words, and I was writing two drafts of each fic, that would get me to the 20k.) I underestimated a bit.

I'm happier about how steady the progress was:

I started this "project" on April 26th, and finished it on May 29th, so just over one month, and I did write at least something every day. The most I wrote in a single day was 3372 words, and the least I wrote was 30 words.

You can sort of see five separate "curves" on there, which were the five fics. (Though the last one looks a bit like two - I had a lot going on toward the end of May, so my wordcounts were a bit lower and spread out over more days, giving it a bit of a double swoop there.)

It definitely feels nice to have that particular set of fics done. I don't like leaving things incomplete, and it took FAR too long to just finally get the last ones done. But it's a relief that they're done now!
Maybe this experience will finally help me to stick to my "no, it doesn't matter how fun the challenge sounds, I do not have the time or energy to do it!" rule, haha.
mistressofmuses: Image of nebulae in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue (Default)
This is "so far", just being the fics I did manage to complete during August. The collection remains unmoderated through September, so I'm planning to try and finish the prompt list by the end of September. We'll see if I manage it!

I did very well for a while on the fic-per-day pace, but crapped out between halfway and two thirds of the way through. I had a few days where I wasn't able to write, and then (as is typical for me when I break a habit) I just... couldn't really get back to it.

There's that joke about self-imposed deadlines being a struggle because "I know the guy enforcing them, and they're a total pushover"? Yeah, that, lol. I can keep to a strict schedule, but once I realize that all the consequences for not sticking to it are utterly fake, I lose the power to make myself do shit, lol. Perhaps I will suddenly possess that ability to a much greater degree than I previously have, lol.

I did previously post the first six fics for the month.

Day 7 - Boarding School AU
"Area of Study" - Kingdom Hearts - Kairi, vague hints of pre-ship SoRiKai - G - 1031 words
Summary: Four years ago, Kairi was whisked away from her life on the distant planet of Port Destiny. She was brought to the hub planet of Radiant Garden, so she could study at their prestigious university. She knows that succeeding there, and making it through their six year curriculum is the only way she'll ever be able to return home, and bring Sora and Riku with her.
A prequel/tie-in to "Asteria," the fic I wrote for the Set Sail zine.

Day 8 - Robots & Androids AU
"Spontaneous Generation" - Kingdom Hearts - Riku & Kairi + Riku & Sora, pre-ship-ish - T - 809 words
Summary: It had been decided that, while the androids superficially resembled humans, they would not be permitted hearts. Humans had hearts, and the warriors of the light protected those hearts, but hearts were also inherently weak, fragile things. Much as it was not considered beneficial for them to feel pain, it was not considered beneficial for them to feel anything else.

Day 9 - Cleaning Crew AU
"Cleanup" - Kingdom Hearts - Sora & Riku & Kairi - G - 633 words
Summary: The world in question had fallen months before, the corruption at its heart at work for some time longer than that. Some worlds fell fast, the darkness overtaking them as a swarm, devouring everything in an unstoppable progression until there was nothing left. Most fell slow, the darkness sinking into the heart of the world and spreading like rot, decaying things just below the surface until it was too late to save.

Day 10 - Exiled AU
"Kept Safe" - Kingdom Hearts - Kairi - G - 944 words
Summary: The one thing that everyone agreed on was that Kairi needed to be kept safe.
Her heart contained the purest light that Radiant Garden had to offer, the most perfect fragment of the worlds’ own heart, and keeping that safe was of the utmost importance. With that light safe, it did not matter what else happened to Radiant Garden. It could be corrupted by the oncoming darkness. It could fall entirely. Anything could be overcome eventually as long as Kairi, and the heart within her, was unharmed.
...
Best to remove all possibility of contact, to ensure there was truly no chance of someone doing her harm.

Day 11 - Doppelganger AU
"Doppelganger" - Kingdom Hearts - T - SoRiKai pre-ship - 1480 words
Summary: It starts with a feeling of being watched. Then seeing motion in the shadows. Then a figure standing in front of the mirror...

Day 12 - Book Store AU
Blind Date With a Book - Kingdom Hearts - G - SoRiKai - 1193 words
Summary: Kairi gets dragged out to a local "blind date with a blind date with a book" event, where participants are matched up based on the books they've selected. She doesn't have high hopes for the event, though the man who makes small talk while they pick their books - and the friend he came along with - are both quite charming.

Day 13 - Behind the Mirror AU
"Through the Glass" - Kingdom Hearts - T - SoRiKai pre-ship - 1519 words
Summary: Stalked by his doppelganger, it seemed obvious that Riku wouldn't be safe at home, so Sora and Kairi drag him to Sora's apartment instead. The three of them take turns staying awake, waiting for the thing to appear, because none of them are convinced it won't follow.
Direct sequel to Day 11's "Doppelganger".

Day 14 - Wizards & Witches AU
"Fire and Water" - Kingdom Hearts - G - SoRiKai - 1040 words
Summary: They’d all agreed that the ocean would be the first place all three of them went.
Kairi knew that choice had really been made for Sora more than for her or for Riku. Not that they were opposed, it just held a little less excitement for them. Riku had grown up on an island, and for Kairi, well… water wasn’t dangerous to her the way it had been such a short time ago, but she was still a fire spirit. Mostly.

Sequel to my longer Howl's Moving Castle fusion, "All Strange Wonders".

Day 15 - Ancient History AU
"Excavation" - Kingdom Hearts - G - SoRiKai - 2128 words
Summary: Arrival on the island felt… momentous in a way that she’d fully expected, yet hadn’t been able to prepare for. It had been such a long time. Impossibly long. She’d never thought she’d be back at all.
Nothing was the same. That was a given. Nothing was as different as it could have been.
There was no village. There were no familiar trails to find where the village had been. But no new cities had been built on top of it. The trees all looked the same, just in new places. Flowers she never thought she’d see again bloomed in the undergrowth. The air felt right. It smelled like home. If someone had asked her to name those things, or even to try and remember them, she would have told them she couldn’t, that it had been too long. Now the familiarity was like a kick to the chest.

Part three of the immortals series, set after Day 2's "Immortal" prompt, and Day 3's "Writer" prompt.

Day 16 - Road Trip AU
"Detour" - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai, Naminé - G - 1770 words
Summary: Riku, Sora, and Kairi are on a road trip. They wind up making a strange detour.
(Spooky, hitchhiking ghost, road trip vibes.)

Day 17 - Fallen Angel AU
"The Potential to Fall - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai - G - 500 words
Summary: An angel loved their fellow angels, and he loved Kairi.
A guardian angel loved their charge, and he loved Sora.
It had become very clear that the love he was feeling was not the angelic kind that he should have been feeling.

Set in the same unwritten angel and demon AU as one of the 2020 AUgust fics, "Falling".

Day 18 - Time Travel AU
"Reset" - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai - T - 2684 words
Summary: The first rewind happened out of desperation.
When Radiant Garden fell, it fell fast. There was no long, slow lead-up; no quiet stirring in the shadows hinting at worse to come. No warning. The darkness overran it in mere hours, first targeting the people who would have been most able to stand against it, overwhelming them by surprise and sheer numbers before spreading out to the rest of the then-unprotected citizenry.

Timeloop!

-

This leaves 13 fics for me to try and finish this month. Oof, we'll see if I can do it.
mistressofmuses: The characters Sora, Riku, and Kairi from Kingdom Hearts lay together on a beach. (Kingdom Hearts)

(The absolutely gorgeous header image that I was given for my fic!)

Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Ship: Sora&Riku&Kairi (more gen than overtly shippy, as per the rules of the zine, but of course *I* say they end up together)
Rating: G
Word count: 2195
Summary: Six years ago, Kairi was taken to the hub planet of Radiant Garden to pursue a prestigious education. Sora and Riku were left behind on the distant satellite of Port Destiny. Separated by seemingly impossible distance, they wonder if she'll keep her promise to return.

On AO3, SquidgeWorld, or Dreamwidth.

This is the fic that I wrote for Set Sail, a Destiny Trio fanzine. If you're interested, you can find more of the art and fic on the zine's tumblr. There were so many amazingly talented writers and artists involved!

"Asteria" was a daughter of Titans in Greek mythology. Her name means "of the stars", and at one point she turned herself into an island, said to have fallen from the sky like a star. It seemed... fitting for the Destiny Trio in terms of imagery, ha.
mistressofmuses: Image of nebulae in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue (Default)
Definitely fallen pretty far behind! I'm one day behind in my AUgust fics, I'm way more than one day behind here, I basically just quit doing my habit tracking a week ago...

It's frustrating to feel like I have a lot to catch up on, and to struggle so badly to find the time to get caught up. (Especially when a lot of that stuff is little and shouldn't be so difficult to do.)

-

I have gotten 6 AUgust fics written, though as I said, I've fallen a day behind. I have not even started prompt #7, and it's pretty unlikely I'll get it written tonight. Maybe tomorrow I'll have a chance to write two fics.

So far I've got:

Day 1 - Sightless AU
"Sightless" - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai - G - 594 words
Summary: Sora and Kairi provided a sort of calibration for whatever this sense was. The brightest lights he’d ever encountered.

Day 2 - Immortals AU
"When It Began" - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai pre-ship - T - 683 words
Summary: Eventually it was clear there was something extraordinary about it, when aging slowed, then stopped for the three of them, even as it marched on for everyone else. They had to face the twin elation and horror of their “condition.” Nothing brought them lasting harm… yet they would begin to lose everyone else around them.

Day 3 - Writer AU
"Finding Pages" - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai - G - 3219 words
Summary: It's been centuries since immortals Riku, Sora, and Kairi were forced to flee their island home. It's been at least a hundred years since they were all together. Sora and Kairi both have gotten close to finding Riku, only to find the writing he's left behind.

Day 4 - Runaway AU
"While We Still Have Time" - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai - G - 1858 words
Summary: Riku, Sora, and Kairi have one final night to spend together, before they go off to separate futures that none of them want. They have one enormous decision to make: do they walk onward down those paths that were chosen for them, or do they create their own?

Day 5 - Pet Sitter AU
"Double-Booked" - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai pre-ship - G - 1692 words
Summary: Kairi and Riku are both pet-sitters, with a fairly intense rivalry after a previous falling out. So they're both understandably surprised to discover they've apparently been booked for the same pet-sitting gig...

Day 6 - Domestic AU
"To Find a Balance Between" - Kingdom Hearts - SoRiKai - G - 1014 words
Summary:
The feeling tended to creep up on him by surprise, and when it did it was overwhelming.
This would have seemed impossible for so long.
-
Years after they decided to leave, Riku thinks about where they are now. Direct sequel to day 4's "Runaway" AU.

Or directly to Chapter 17
Fandom: Silent Hill (video game series)
Rating: M
Ship: none

Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Illness, Canon-Typical Violence, Character Death

Summary:
"In memory of the sixty seven who died of illness and now sleep beneath the lake." -The Rosewater Memorial in Silent Hill
The town of Silent Hill has long been known for strange events. In 2016, a virulent illness tears through the town, progressing rapidly through an array of horrific symptoms before the patients die. Worse, it has no identifiable cause. Epidemiologist Anna Garcia is sent to record everything she can about the sickness, in the hopes of tracing it to some point of origin, or discover something to combat it. She finds far more to the history of the town and its strange past.

Alternates between epistolary "reports" and prose chapters.

-

In chapter 17, Anna completes her epidemiological report. Symptoms are "miraculously" in remission for the remaining patients... so why doesn't it feel like everything is over?
mistressofmuses: Image of nebulae in the colors of the bi pride flag: pink, purple, and blue (Default)
Today was less of a disaster at work. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Writing has been a solid... okay. I dragged my feet a bit even after setting up that goal calendar, and then mid-week I really dug down and realized that meant I had to outline a whole section (sometimes two) every single day in order to meet the goal of finishing the basic outline by the 15th. It's possible I'll go over by a day or so, but I might be able to do it!

I'm frustrated by the OTW response on AI. The most recent one was I guess better (or at least had some substance to it) than the original quote from the legal advisor and the weird nothing of a "clarification", but it's not REALLY better. I'm glad they're attempting to prevent large-scale scraping of the archive, and I DO understand that there are legitimate uses they don't want to prevent... but to then say that they still find AI "fic" to be a legitimate thing to include in the archive seems baffling. "We understand that people are uncomfortable having their materials stolen and used as part of a training set, which inherently is going to function by way of theft, and so we're trying to keep your things from being stolen... but it's also totally fine to do the stealing!" What?

Alex is sick today. He didn't feel great when he got up, and he looked terrible when he came to pick me up. He was mostly feeling sick to his stomach, so I went to the store and got him some ginger ale and graham crackers, which at least stayed where he put them.

Sora is cursed by a warlock to become nameless and forgotten by anyone who knew him. Hoping to find a way to lift the curse, he finds Riku - known as "The Heartless Sorcerer", a man rumored to devour hearts - and Kairi, Riku's contract-bound fire-spirit. Sora strikes a deal with Kairi: if he can help her out of her contract with Riku, she'll help him with his curse. Soon it becomes clear that Sora may not be the only one operating under a curse... and Riku's could possibly be deadly if nothing stops it.

-

In The Epilogue, everything gets wrapped up, and the trio plan for a future.

-

And this fic is now complete! Definitely a little bittersweet - I really enjoyed writing this one, and while it's been completely written for a while, now that it's posted, it's actually done done!
