And the work hits keep coming... my shift ended at 6:00 today, but one of the drivers who finished at 7:00 texted me to tell me that our newest instructor no-showed for her 6:30. The student was still there, and understandably upset and angry that her instructor had never come in.

I specifically gave this instructor my number so that she could let me know if she would be unable to make it in, because she started hinting around both that she was struggling with having a second job and that she was worried her car might not be reliable, plus that her parents didn't like her working so much because it meant she wasn't home to help them around the house. She already spoke to the manager, and agreed to work through the end of the month, and that for June and beyond we got special permission for her to work fewer hours than the minimum typically required.

I'm sympathetic... I only worked two jobs for a very short period, and one was very limited hours, but it burned me out pretty good. She's also the instructor who lost a close friend last week.

But no-call/no-show is pretty shitty, especially for the student that it stranded.

She was scheduled for four appointments tomorrow, and I don't trust she'd come in for those, either.

I called the field director, because my manager is on vacation. She said she'd try to contact the instructor, and take action accordingly.
My manager texted me - so my attempt to not bug him on vacation was kind of for naught - and said that the drives tomorrow would be cancelled, too. Presumably the new person resigned, so dreading that for all her future appointments, too. (We have no available appointments until August, sobcry.)

Tomorrow I'm off of work (and as coincidental as that is, I feel like I picked the damn right day to not have to deal with shit, lol. Except it will probably be my problem on Sunday anyway.)

The reason I'm off of work is to drive to Wyoming for a model show with Alex. Of course, it's still FUCKING SNOWING, so we'll see what the highway is like. The 90° yesterday (before the SNOW TODAY) definitely kept the snow from sticking for quite some time, which was helpful throughout the day, but that luck may run out overnight.

We'll see.

Tomorrow is likely to be pretty tiring, so it may be Sunday before I get caught up here. My brain is drained after the long day, and worrying about how much will be waiting for me on Sunday.

So apparently one of our employees (not at my center, but at one of the other ones my manager is in charge of) falsified parts of his application when he was hired last year. He gave us a fake social security number. The real one comes back with a fairly extensive arrest history and drug charges. (:

The way the background checks we do work is that they look at name and ssn in combination (so that there isn't a concern about someone sharing the same name as someone else), but it's JUST a check of criminal history. So there's no way for it to distinguish between "no criminal record" and "no record at all."

I don't know how this issue was discovered, except that it's both the end of tax season and also the time of year that the state asks for our people to recertify (including a new background check and driving record search), so I'm guessing one or the other of those things led to finding his real ssn, and therefore the accurate background.

So, uh... that's going to suck. He's obviously going to be fired, since a clean background check is a requirement. Unfortunately, the center he's at has very few instructors, so his schedule is completely full, which will require a LOT of rescheduling those students.

I'm anticipating that my day tomorrow (and probably Wednesday) is going to be taken up with trying to deal with that stuff. (Unfortunately, I'm "good" at rescheduling people. As in, I have a very sympathetic voice over the phone, so getting bad news from me isn't the worst that it could be. This is unfortunate for me, because I HATE it. It activates my rejection-sensitive dysphoria like mad, because I know I'm having to give people news that will disappoint or upset them, and I do not know in advance how they are going to take it.)

Not excited about that, heh.

Had the worst call with some guy today. It lasted 35 goddamn minutes of my life.

He called in, already sounding frustrated and upset, to give me a number we need in order to process a student's classes/tests with the state. But instead of following the directions we sent, he called the DMV... and was set up with the wrong thing. I offered to help walk him through the process correctly (which like, fuck me for trying to help, lol). He complained (in a screaming, profanity-laced way) the entire time. It was like a cross between a drunk guy ranting in a bar, and someone practicing a stand-up routine about how much they hate the DMV and the government.

I got to hear about:
- how unfair it is the "citizen of today" is forced to do so much
- how (at 1:30ish) this had already taken up his whole afternoon
- how no "average citizen" could understand all this
- (but how he wouldn't consider himself an "average" citizen, because there are a lot of things he can do that the average person can't - thankfully he did not elaborate)
- how "back in the day" people did their jobs and didn't expect "citizens" to do all of this, but now "they" just say "visit our website"
- (and how young people these days don't know any better and just DO visit the website, because we've been TRICKED into just thinking we should do all this stuff)
- that it's government tyranny that they expect people to have a printer to print forms off
- (when I told him that a copy would be emailed to him so that he didn't have to print it right away, he assured me it's fine, because he has a printer)
- that the government wants "citizens" to do all this stuff to stress them out and then sends things like Covid out to kill them off
- his kid's trust fund
- how much he hates "that one lady" who answers the phone "at the IRS"
- how the government can zoom in on everyone's houses, so he wants to go outside and flip them off
- that this just makes him so angry at the big bosses out there, and he wants to "punch them in the head and the gut and the liver"

And at the end when we FINALLY got the right number, he finished up by thanking me for being so sweet and helpful and "I bet you're real pretty, too."

Barf.

ETA: Also found out they need me to go to the fucking Aurora office on Sunday and the Highlands Ranch office on Monday, the former being around 45 minutes away from me, and the latter being about 40 minutes away. I am trying to be sympathetic, because the lack of coverage is due to two people having to go to a funeral and one or two other people getting Covid shots, so I don't want to sound like a dick. But I hate going to both those offices, and ever since the bullshit about "if you don't come in during a blizzard due to safety concerns, you will be written up and possibly fired" I have had NO real desire to go out of my way to be helpful.
