You were a wonderful dog. Thank you for being there for my mom and my younger sibling for 13 years out of your 16(ish). May you have the softest beds, and the best bits of chicken, all the ear skritches, and everything you ever wanted to herd forever.

We will miss you.

(The vet had an emergency yesterday, so had to wait until this evening to come out for Raven. She had a couple final days with many pets and hugs and kisses.)

No zoo pictures today - too busy!

Forgot that Alex was riding today. I didn't plan to go with, but as he was leaving, he asked if I wanted to, so I said sure. I still hadn't seen their new facility.

It is very nice! Which is good, considering how expensive it is, oof. We jokingly call it "Snooty Acres Equestrian Facility", but honestly most of the people there are nice. It's just... real pricey.

The ride seemed to go well - he said there was a bit of frustration with Lola, but not badly. I thought it looked all right. We left there around 1:30, after visiting his trainer's other horses.

After that we ran a couple errands, then stopped by my mom's house, because my ballot was delivered there.

I got to see Raven - she does seem to have figured out ways to navigate a bit better. She sort of swings her head from side to side, I think to make sure she isn't going to bump into anything. She definitely can't see, though. She heard my voice, so wanted to come say hi, but was looking a few inches to the side of me until I touched her. But she seemed okay - still wagging and happy to get attention. She lay down between me and Taylor while we chatted a bit, and fell asleep. The vet gave her a steroid shot yesterday, which may take another day or two to show results of. She also starts some px eyedrops tonight, which may help.

And I WAS planning to try and get some writing and writing-adjacent stuff done today. :/ But it's almost 6:00, and we're using cheap movie day to see Lamb tonight in about an hour. I hope it's better than Malignant! It seems like it'll be weird, but I'm good with weird. Just not bad. I'm also glad that I can see well enough now to read subtitles! (My outdated glasses px did not allow for that.)

I think I finished the first chapter of Island Territory last night. (I don't want this to be a long fic - I'm planning on four chapters of 2000-3000 words each.) I was going to try and rewrite/second draft it today, but I'm guessing that's not to be. I'll probably start on it, and see if I can get it rewritten and ready for posting later this week.

Went to the zoo today! We'd planned to last week, but Alex wasn't feeling well. Today wound up being a perfect day to go - nicely warm, but no longer HOT. Lots of animals were out and appreciating the weather, too, which is always fun. As almost always, we ran out of time at the end - the late morning ticketing times were sold out, so we went at 12:15... and even with 5 hours, hit closing time while we were still in the "Tropical Discovery" building, and had to speed-walk the last several exhibits.

Took a ton of pictures, as ever, so I'll try to get those posted tomorrow. :)

In less fun news, apparently Raven (my mom and Taylor's dog) very suddenly went blind yesterday. She's fairly old - 10 years old? Maybe 11? - and has had a few "bumping into things" issues for a long time. But this was just very sudden and complete, and Taylor said she was obviously distressed about it, seeming confused and scared.

Taylor took Raven to the vet today, and they said she seems fine otherwise. She has some inflammation around the ocular nerves, so they gave her some treatments that will hopefully help that. It's possible that if the inflammation is resolved, that some or all of her vision may come back, but it also may not.

It sounds like she seems more well-adjusted tonight - she's navigating a bit better, and she seems less upset. They blocked off the stairs to the basement just to prevent any falls, but otherwise she's fortunately only ever really spent time on the main level of the house, so this won't restrict too much of her movement, assuming she figures out how to navigate.

I know several people who've had or have known blind dogs that adjust fairly well, even when it happens later in life, and I don't doubt that Raven will do so if she needs to. But I very much wish there was a way to explain to a dog what's happened, because that's gotta be terrifying.
